Slot Canyons

When cracks in sandstone erode in repeated heavy rains, deep and very narrow canyons can form. Some of the best examples in the world form at Page, Arizona, near the Glen Canyon Dam.

Into the Slot

Slot canyons can be dangerous places. On August 12, 1997, these European tourists died in a flash flood when a storm upstream, undetected at this entrance, suddenly filled the canyon with blue skies above.

Today there is a warning system in place for storms upstream
