Chile – Punta Arenas

Antarctic Research Starts Here

As a ‘free port’ with relaxed customs rules and Chile’s southernmost large city, Punta Arenas is well situated as a starting point for Antarctic exploration. This research ship is one of many which dock here.

Up the Channel

On a clear but windy final morning on the expedition ship, we head north up the Paso Ancho channel toward the Chilean mainland.

The Lighthouse

The San Isidro Lighthouse as built in 1904 and is now at the center of a large natural preserve.

Ready To Leave

We’re all packed and set to leave the expedition ship when we dock in Punta Arenas.

Docking the Ship

The crew secures ropes at the bow, docking next to the Ventus‘ sister ship, Stella Australis.

The Plaza

The main feature is a monument to Ferdinand Magellan, below.

Sagrado Corazón

The Sacred Heart Cathedral.

The Hotel Plaza

The largest hotel in town. Below, funky wiring and a political poster.
