After the invading Japanese were driven from China at the end of World Warld War II, Nationalist supporters of Sun Yat-Sen clashed with Mao Zhedong’s more numerous Communists. The Nationalist forces retreated to the old Portuguese – Spanish conical island of Formosa, leaving the mainland to Mao.
