Japan’s Northernmost Big City
In this largest Japanese city north of of Tokyo, the unusual Western-influenced architecture got its start in the time os US President Andrew Jackson, when Japan reached to the west for advice on expanding the city.


A Brick City
Because Sapporo is not as subject to earthquakes as the rest of the country, masonry was used from the 19th Century to ward off the cold climate. This is the Hokkaido Government Office.
