University of Tsukuba

The Core of a Science City

In the mid-Seventies, the Japanese government looked at the long-term need to incubate scientific research, and purchased a large tract of farmland to be developed as Tsukuba Science City. At the time shown here, only the new University had been built. Today, Science City is a $50 billion operation.

A new generation of researchers

It was no accident that Tsukuba University was the first part of Science City infrastructure to be completed. Today thaw initial graduates run the operation.
