France: Vienne
A Roman Provincial capital
Because of its status as a major center of trade in Roman Gaul, VIenne is rich in ruins from that era. Later, its status as a boshpric of Christian Gaul made it the location of the Council of VIenne and the hometown of the Knights Templar order.
Walking the town
Vienne’s status as a strategic center in two different eras makes it a unique architectural mix.
The Temple of Augustus and Livia
This Corinthian temple dates to the first century BCE, and was dedicated to the imperial cult, named for Caesar Augustus and his wife.
The St. Maurice Cathedral
Built from 1032 to 1533, it is a basilica. Its sculptures were heavily damaged during the Wars of Religion in 1562.
