Cinque Terre: Manarola to Corniglia

Village of the Big Wheel

Manarola takes its name from the large waterwheel, originally Roman,

Manarola

After a cloudy dawn over the bay before our start, we begin in Manarola, reaching it by train from La Spezia.

Houses that must be accessed from across a storm drainage

Thid water mill is thought to have given its name to the village, from the Latin “magna roea.” or ‘big wheel’

The boat lift, raising fishing boats up the cliff rom the sea.

Up the hill to Volastra

Corniglia is high on the hill above the sea, so as Manarola falls behind we take the trail through the village of Volastra.

A cargo monorail track crossing a field and following our trail. These tracks allow working of steep vineyards.
A large trailside sign now weathered beyond recognition
We’re almost up….
Made it to Volastra! From this small hamlet, our trail runs straight across to Corniglia.
Volastra has a spot for snacks and drinks
You can learn lot bout local culture from the village bulletin board
For travelers coming the other way, Manarola is straight down
Here again, most of the trail distances are expressed as time
Views of the Mediterranean open up
This part of the trail has one switchback going around a house on three sides. You have to like company to live here.
You have to back down this pitch
