Italy: Colonnata to Vergheto
Atop a Canyon of Marble
Rome may not have been built in a day, but when it was , the marble came from the Alpine foothills above Carrara. In the town of Colonnata at the top of the canyon of black-veined white marble that is still being mined today, a peacock struts across the marble parking lot on the plaza.
Marble Everywhere
In the town of Colonnata, at the top of the canyon of marble, even the parking lot is paved with this stone.
Colonnata and the marble canyon below it were among the locations for the 2024 movie The Brutalist.
The Gothic Line
Above Colonnata are Alpine foothills with a chestnut forest. In the last days of WW II, this area concealed partisan resistance against the Germans.
Forgotten Vergheto
In the chestnut forest, this ghost town is being revived as adventurous city folk come to resettle.
