Wainwright Day 7: Kirkeby Stephen to Keld
Over the Pennine Hills
We cros Britain’s central north-south range.
Nine Standards Rigg
The Standards on this hill are Neolithic cairns, 6,000 years old, of unknown usage. They were built on a Ricky outcropping at the edge of a peat bog, which e must now cross. Large amounts of runoff are pouring in our direction from the top.
Out of the bog
Lunch at a grouse-hunters’ warming hut as we descend from Nine Standards Rigg. From here, we move down into the valley of the Swale, which on this side of the Pennine divide is following us east to the North Sea.
We will now be entering the Yorkshire Dales.
