The Waterfront

This calm stretch of water is the Beagle Channel, separating Ushuaia from the uninhabited Magellanic islands of southernmost Chile. The colorful wrappings on the railing are to prevent your hands from freezing if you need to grab it when the wind rises.

This old prison is now a museum. Prisoners here built most of the earliest construction and infrastructure in Ushuaia, in a time when Argentina was first trying to establish a claim on this distant territory.

This corridor of the museum is kept in its original state to show the conditions the prisoners lived under.
