Chile – Wulaia Cove
Navarino Island, Southernmost Chile
Home of the Yaghan people, this island supports beech forests and grasslands. We’ll also see the ship’s lounges and bridge.
The Ship’s Lounges
The lower deck coffee lounge of the Ventus Australis. This is used for talks and preparation for excursions.
The upper deck lounge, with its comfy seating, has the best views.
The Bridge
Navigation, communications and emergency management.
Hiking the Cove
After a short Zodiac ride, we land on the Cove.
Return To Sender
Wulaia Cove was originally a small village, now abandoned, with a post office that has now ben converted to a museum.
Calafate
It’s early spring. These sweet and juicy berries turn blue when ripe and can be made into preserves. They can also be used to flavor drinks.
Mistletoe
Mistletoe stands out in a tree that is still winter-bare.
Forests
For such a southerly island, Navarino supports a variety of trees. Hills and valleys provide sheltered spots.
Below, a tree gall formed by a nesting wasp, and finding tiny plants under the trees.
Above the Cove
From the top of a rise, we can see the whole bay.
A Yaghan Canoe
The Yaghan have lived in the region for 6,000 years. This canoe is featured in the Island museum.
