Invercargill

The Farthest South

This town of 57,000 is the southernmost city in New Zealand, at 46 degrees south. As we drive clockwise around South Island, this city represents our transition from the Otago plains to the Fjordland coast in the southwest.

A sere seacoast

Approaching Invercargill, we face the Southern Ocean, where cold water nourishes rich fisheries but keeps the people on land.

…but we go down to the sea first
So much kelp grows just offshore that it calms the waves around the coast

A lighthouse

A steep climb up this hillside brings us to this lighthouse.

Farm life

Over a weekend on a sheep farm near Invercargill, we look at life at the far end of South Island

Sheep are grass-fed on these hills
In the shearing barn
Near the farmhouse, an abundance of flowers…
A pair of old boots becomes part of a rock garden
The closest beach is nor far from the house
At a nearby dairy farm…
Cows are milked on a huge concrete platter taht rotates slowly, so the 3-man crew can stay in come place
