Iceland: JokullsarlĂłn

Iceland’s Tidewater Glacier

Pronounced “Yokut-sar-lone”: All of Iceland’s glaciers terminate before reaching the sea, except for this one. Because the Vatnajökull icecap is so large, it reaches the bay of JokullsarlĂłn, breaking up into icebergs as it does so. R: the visitor center.

Getting ready to head out

We wait for a tour of the bay by boat.

The beach is made of slate pebbles smoothed by wave action below the glacier
It’s a chill rainy day, but away we go!
The lagoon is of very recent origin, forming in 1935 as the glacier retreated from its old location near the bridge
Icebergs which have freshly turned over are blue, while older bergs weather to a dirty white
At the seaward entracnce to the lagoon, there is a short shallow exit to the sea. Ice can get stuck here for extended periods of time
