NATO’s Cold War capital

After World War II, this historic city found itself on the front lines of the uneasy postwar standoff with the Soviet empire. In frontline support of NATO headquarters in Brussels, the US Army maintained a massive garrison to counter any Soviet invasion of Western Europe through the Fulda Gap.
