Wainwright Day 2: Ennerdale to Borrowdale

Into the Lake District

Ice Age glaciation created sharp peaks, U-shaped valleys and glacial lakes in this region that is unique in Britain.. The hills here are ‘fells’ from the Old Norse.

Beside Ennerdale Water

As we leave Ennerdale, we pass the Shepherds Arms pub, where we had eaten last night.Immediately after, we hike by our first Lake of the District.

Over Ennerdale Bridge, we head down to Ennerdale Water
The trail undulates as we proceed to the end of the lake

Black Sail Hut

This untended youth hostel at the head of the valley beyond Ennerdale Water is open to all hikers for shelter and food – and keep maintained – on the honor system. We pause to make tea there.

Into Honister Valley

From Blacksail Hut we climb a rocky pass where numerous streams are gushing down the slope from springs, eroding deep channels. On the other side, we pass through an old state quarry (Below) that has been revived as a boutique operation.
